A delightful volume comprising two poetical works.The very scarce first edition of Poems (1781), being one of three chief works attributed to English poet and cleric, Thomas Penrose. Edited with a biographical introduction by James Pettit Andrews, who had married Penrose's sister Anne.Penrose's chief productions are mainly imitative of Collins and Gray; but several of his poems deal in a natural vein with his disappointments in life. [DONB]. His major works are Flights of Fancy, Address to the Genius of Britain, and the present posthumous volume.Bound together with the fourth edition of Anna Laetitia Barbauld's Poems (1774). A prominent member of the Blue Stockings Society and a "woman of letters", Barbauld made a founding contribution to the development of British Romanticism in her poems, amongst her many other innovative essays and children's books.In a lovely full tree calf binding, with gilt to the spine and red morocco spine label. Marbled endpapers, retaining the original blanks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with offsetting to the blanks and mild toning to the title page. Spotting towards the rear. Near Fine.
