A very old 19th Century Victorian copy and reprint of the historically important work that was first published in 1640 in exactly the same format. Old brown half- cloth covers over brown marbled paper.Yellow endpapers, title page with emblem, followed by publisher John Benson's preface "to the Reader", commendatory poems by Leonard Digges and John Warren, further title page and then the poems themselves. The edition combines most of Shakespeare's sonnets (numbers 18, 19, 43, 56, 75, 76, and 126 are omitted), mingled with poems from The Passionate Pilgrim (the corrupt 1612 edition), plus A Lover's Complaint, The Phoenix and the Turtle, Milton's poem to Shakespeare from the Second Folio, poems by Ben Jonson, Francis Beaumont, Robert Herrick and others, and miscellaneous pieces. The William Marshall portrait of Shakespeare which was in the original 1640 edition is not present here. Very good condition throughout.Gatherings a little loose inplaces, which adds to the charmof the item. A few small neat pencil names. Neat ink name/date to f.f.e.p. The seller acquired this from the estate of the renowned Shakespearean scholar and Scottish playwright John Cargill Thompson (1938-200) whose cataloguing mark is added to the ffep. Something of a rarity and certain to be of interest to collectors of all old books relating to William Shakespeare. In summary, this is not the original first edition but a rare 19th copy of it.
