Item description from seller

HERBERT, George (1593–1633); HEBER, Reginald (1783–1826). The Poetical Works of George Herbert and Reginald Heber. With Memoirs. Edinburgh and London: Gall & Inglis, n.d. [circa 1860]. Illustrated Edition. Small octavo (8vo). Three preliminary leaves, [v]–xvi, 312; xiv, 72 pp. Illustrated with eight steel engravings, including an engraved title page and portrait frontispiece. Finely bound by S. Houldsworth of 69 Cross Street, Manchester, in contemporary full brown morocco-grain leather, elaborately decorated in gilt to both boards and spine, with raised bands, gilt titling, all edges gilt, gilt turn-ins, and marbled endpapers. Binder’s ticket to the front pastedown. An attractive Victorian devotional anthology bringing together the poetry of two prominent Anglican churchmen: George Herbert, author of The Temple, and Reginald Heber, bishop and hymn writer. The elaborate gilt binding gives the volume considerable decorative and presentation appeal. Early ownership inscription dated 1868 and a later inscription dated 1928 to the front endpaper. Contents generally clean and unmarked, with light, even toning. Binding remains sound. Leather rubbed and worn at the extremities, with some loss along the spine edges; early paper hinge repair visible internally. A very good-minus copy in a particularly handsome contemporary binding. Additional photographs available upon request. International shipping available. [Attributes: Hard Cover; Illustrated.].
