Item description from seller

The very scarce collection of the poetical works of Patrick Hannay, being a facsimile of the edition of 1622 and presented in the very scarce original publisher's paper wraps. Complete in one volume with two full page monochrome engravings, one depicting Hannay and the other being a facsimile of the 1622 title page for The Nightingale Sheretine. The work also contains a coloured vignette illustration depicting the shield of Hannay Arms. Very scarce, particularly scarce in the original publisher's wraps. Privately printed for The Hunterian Club. The club was founded in 1819 in honour of the Scottish surgeon John Hunter. Patrick Hannay was a seventeenth century Scottish poet and courtier, perhaps best known for his 1619 work A Happy Husband, which was written in imitation of Thomas Overbury's work 'Wife'. The work is a facsimile edition of the 1622 collection of poetry, complete with a memoir of the author written by P. H. M'Kerlie, a member of The Hunterian Club. The collection contains many of Hannay's most well known works, including, The Nightingale, a poem in stanzas of sixteen lines, A Happy Husband and Elegies on the death of Queen Anne. The work is a scarce example of the facsimile edition of the works of a note seventeenth century poet. In the original publisher's wrap. Externally sound with the occasional closed tear and chipping to the extremities of the wrap. Creasing to the spine. The occasional mark and spot to the wrap. Internally generally firmly bound although strained in places. Pages very bright bright.Tidemark to the extremity of the plate depicting Hannay, otherwise pages clean. Pages roughly cut with many pages unopened. Good.
