Hardback, undated but 1868 (introduction dates from December 1867), first edition thus, illustrated with 13 plates (frontispiece opposite title page and then plates opposite pages 2, 47, 123, 185, 207, 271, 303, 369, 443, 477, 499, 532), published by Frederick Warne and Co., London, and printed by Savill Edwards and Co., viii + 640 pages. Octavo/8vo, measures around 5 5/8" by 7 5/8" by 1 3/4". Tan calf binding, gilt lettering and decoration to front board with Edinburgh Angus Club prize stamp; gilt lettering and detail to spine with black label and raised bands; front and rear boards with blind-stamped edging.
Some marking and scuffing to binding but reasonably clean for age, with colouring and detail mostly vivid, albeit with some discolouration to rear board. A few little holes to outer rear hinge. Page edges speckled, with some browning, scuffing and marking. Cracking along full extent of inner hinges with netting exposed, some strain at places in textblock but book contents mostly firm. A little worming to rear pastedown, small tear-holes to front and rear endpapers. Some dog-eared page corners. Occasional marking to pages but they are generally very clean and do not appear to contain any inscriptions, underlining, marginalia, etc. See pictures for further information. viii + 640 pp.
