The first edition of this work, Volume 2, Number 10, ofPoetry London, in the publisher's original cloth binding. Ink inscription to the front free end paper, dated 1945. Meary James Thurairajah Tambimuttu (1915-1983) was a Tamil poet, editor, critic and publisher, who had significant influence in the literary scenes of London and New York City, particularly in the 1940s and 1950s. In 1939, he founded the literary magazine Poetry London, to which many well-known writers contributed, including: Lawrence Durrell, Kathleen Raine, W. H. Auden, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Roy Campbell, Robin Skelton, and many others. Consequently the magazine showcased late modernist and American Beat poetry. This 1944 work is Volume 2, Number 10, ofPoetry London, containing a letter in memory of the war poet Keith Douglas (1920-1944); poetry and prose from well-known writers such as R. S. Thomas, Stevie Smith, Henry Miller, and Lawrence Durrell; a lithograph to T. S. Eliot's Rhapsody on a Windy Night by Gerald Wilde, and drawings for The Ancient Mariner by Mervyn Peake. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, cloth is generally smart, though faded to the spine and front board, with a little bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with spotting to the first and last few pages, and to the fore edge, affecting the occasional page. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 897M1
