About this Item
A rather pleasing Good Plus to Very Good copy. Bound in a probably contemporary half calf, lightly rubbed, but no damage, with marbled paper coverd boards, marbled page edges (fading) , and marbled endpapers. Titled in gilt to the spine, with five raised bands and (rubbed) gilt decoration to the compartments, with a darker brown title block with bright gilt titling. Internally a 1963 ink gift note on the reverse of the front free endpaper, but no other notes or similar in the book. Some light foxing (pale age spots) to the prelims, title and end pages, with a very occasional light spot/small patch appearing sparsely in the text, but overall internally giving the appearance of a very clean, tight white, and bright text block. All hinges tight. Very Good overall. Pp (i-viii) ; 1 - 290. " 'The Portent' is George Macdonald's 'forgotten' novel, it is his only novel that can be classified as horror, due to the story containing a variety of dark elements such as ghosts, nightmarish visions, and madness. The Portent s main plot seems at first glance to be that of a generic gothic novel: A tutor falls in love with a wealthy heiress, but has to overcome a variety of unusual elements.an ancient family curse; The heiress has been twisted into a bizarre-acting, extremely dysfunctional adult; the story takes place in an old, creepy mansion that might be haunted; are events supernatural or natural, etc. It s compellingly strange and somewhat unique, and it also has the same vibrant writing style of MacDonald s classic fantasy." (Garner). 2024 marked This year marked 200 years since the birth of George MacDonald, whose fantasy writing and ideas on faith, spirits, folk lore, etc, inspired literary greats including J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. This is a particularly nice copy of the Rare First Edition. See Images. ; Small 8vo 7" - 8" tall. Seller Inventory # 120220
