[Poster]: Mountains to Mining; International Design Conference Aspen: Invisible City - June 17-22, 1972

Poster (24" x 36"). Designed by Joel Katz and the architecture firm Murphy, Levy, Wurman for the International Design Conference in Aspen, Colorado held on June 17-22, 1972. Gently rolled, tiny crease at the top corner, a couple tiny soil marks on verso, near fine. One of thirteen posters designed for the conference exploring the programs, philosophies and materials that use the resources of the city as an environment for learning. Murphy, Levy, Wurman was a Philadelphia architecture firm that did the urban design plan for Penn’s Landing, and were also the architects for the high-rise building at 1700 Market Street, which was the tallest one built in Philadelphia in the 1960s. They also did graphic design for their own books, the high-speed line to the airport, SEPTA maps, and more. Richard Saul Wurman of the firm was appointed as chairman for this design conference, and was responsible for developing the theme and named the conference "Invisible City". From the theme's statement he wrote: "The most extensive facility imaginable for learning is our urban environment and the people in it.If we can make our urban environment observable and understandable we will have created classrooms with endless windows on the world." Speakers at the event included: architect Louis Kahn, FCC chairman Nicholas Johnson, and academic theoretician Everett Reimer.
