Power Generation and the Environment (Science, Technology, and Society Series, 6)

This book provides an in-depth review of the effects of the large-scale generation of electricity. Though known as a versatile, clean and efficient source of power at its point of use, the growing consumption of electricity poses important political problems due to wide-ranging effects involved in its production. These may range from environmental damage to irreversible changes in the climate. The authors trace the reasons for our ever-increasing energy needs and consider various means of generation, from fossil fuels to nuclear energy, with a look at some promising renewable technologies. This informative text is aimed at general readers rather than technical experts. The aim throughout is to set forth the relevant facts so that readers can reach their own conclusions. An extensive bibliography is provided for those interested in further research.

'well produced ... the authors present the material in a refreshingly unbiased nonpolemical way and insist that the reader be aware of the basic technology of the various stages in the production and distribution of electricity' Environment and Planning A, 1991
