Large 8vo. [2], 5-426, [2], [1], 2-16, [4] pp. Green publisher's cloth with borders in blind on each board, gold lettering and gold rules on the spine. With ten plates of black and white photographs: the photographs show conditions the author calls "mania", "senile insanity", "epileptic insanity", "confusional insanity", "melancholia", among others. The volume concludes with a chapter on the "ethics of insanity" which contains considerations on marriage and children, the chance children have of inheriting these conditions from their parents, etc. An illuminating volume on the state of psychiatry and mental health treatment (and stigma) at the turn of the twentieth century. Light wear to the edges of the cloth, a contemporary name on the front pastedown.
