Item description from seller

x, 2 leaves, 229, [1] pp, 3 plates (2 folding). Original boards. Chipped at top of spine. Splitting along front joint. Original paper spine label chipped. Preserved in cloth clamshell box. First Edition. Bound with: EARLE, Henry: Remarks, by the Author, on Sir Astley Cooper's Reply to His Critical Observations on Fracture of the Neck of the Femur. London: J. Moyes, [13 Sept. 1823]. 8 pp. Publisher's ads. at end. "The grandson of Percivall Pott, Earle was surgeon to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, taught anatomy and surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons, and served as surgeon extraordinary to Queen Victoria. He invented a bed for cases of fracture of the legs, illustrated in the present work. Practical Observations also contains Earle's essay on certain fractures of the thigh, which involved him in a controversy with Astley Cooper. Cooper disagreed with Earle's view on fracture of the neck of the femur, maintaining that such fractures never unite. Earle defended his position in the present pamphlet" (Norman 675-676, this copy).
