Add to basketFirst edition, xi + [1] + 174pp, 12 plates (some folding out), mauve cloth, gilt title to spine. The contents in very good condition (some foxing and staining to the plates), the boards unevenly faded and a little scuffed & worn. The first edition of Simms' seminal work, a second edition followed in 1859 and later editions in 1877 and 1896. From 1836 to 1846 Simms was employed by the South Eastern Railway and was responsible for laying out its circuitous route through Kent and when work started on building the railway he was appointed engineer on the Bletchingley and Saltwood Tunnels, by which he gained much of that practical experience and knowledge, afterwards embodied in his Practical Tunnelling.
