Founded by Augustus around 27 B.C., the elite Praetorian Guard was tasked with the protection of the emperor and his family. As the centuries unfolded, however, Praetorian soldiers served not only as protectors and enforcers but also as powerful political players. Fiercely loyal to some emperors, they vied with others and ruthlessly toppled those who displeased them, including Caligula, Nero, Pertinax, and many more. Guy de la Bédoyère provides a compelling first full narrative history of the Praetorians, whose dangerous ambitions ceased only when Constantine permanently disbanded them.
de la Bédoyère introduces Praetorians of all echelons, from prefects and messengers to artillery experts and executioners. He explores the delicate position of emperors for whom prestige and guile were the only defenses against bodyguards hungry for power. Folding fascinating details into a broad assessment of the Praetorian era, the author sheds new light on the wielding of power in the greatest of the ancient world’s empires.

Store description
jdp books is a small, family owned bookseller, selling pre-owned books and a small selection of fine art, to the UK and worldwide. Our aim is to unite mainly academic readers and researchers with the knowledge they seek, and we would love our books to go to those who have a real interest in the subjects we hold. We value the ethos of sustainability and encourage the re-use of pre-owned books. We specialize primarily in History, the Classics and Archaeology, but we also hold a wide range of titles across many subjects, including some rare and out of print and first editions. We hold titles in Travel and exploration, Poetry, Literature, Politics, Art, Economics and more, and we hope to send our customers very good quality books with as little signs of wear as possible (depending, of course, on the age of the book). We also hold a small but growing number of art works, which we feel might be of interest to art lovers. Our dedicated team are happy to help with all enquiries and will try to ensure you find the book or artwork you are looking for.…
