Classic narrative history of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and its circle, covering Rossetti, Millais, Holman Hunt, Morris, Burne-Jones, and others. The book is arranged in five parts: Brotherhood, Separation, Illusion and Delusion, Climax and Catastrophe, and The Last Phase, with index and a list of illustrations. Frontispiece is Rossetti's The Beloved; plates include Burne-Jones's title page design for the Kelmscott Chaucer among many other reproductions.
