From its first episode in 1937, Hal Foster's Prince Valiant expanded the possibilities of the comic strip by pioneering realistically drawn adventures. The Super Heroes of the ensuing decades would owe a great visual debt to the superbly muscled crusaders that regularly stormed through its pages. Set in the mythical "days of King Arthur", Prince Valiant's intricate detail and exquisite rendering belie the creative condensation of Foster's historical research, telescoping hundreds of years of history into a fantastic moment in which Norman castles stand sentinel on Fifth Century hills.
