Skeat was the founder of the English Dialect Society, which led prepared the way for Joseph Wright's great English Dialect Dictionary (1896-1905); he was an early memeber of the Early English Text Society, and prepared a number of important texts for them, the most important of which was his great edition of Piers Plowman, which took twenty years to complete.
