First edition, 8vo, pp. xxxiv, 541, [3], 40; green publisher's cloth, gilt title on spine; boards rubbed, occasional marginal marks, very good. One of four parts. Skeat was the founder of the English Dialect Society, which led prepared the way for Joseph Wright's great English Dialect Dictionary (1896-1905); he was an early memeber of the Early English Text Society, and prepared a number of important texts for them, the most important of which was his great edition of Piers Plowman, which took twenty years to complete.
