The first edition of this very scarce work.An essay exploring the judicial system of Victorian England, and its use of punishment. The work looks at how better to prevent crime in the first place, penned at a time when the English judicial system was undergoing great changes.Written by Constantine Estlin Prichard.Read in the Theatre at Oxford, on the 20th June 1844.Bookplate of Reverend T. I. Pocock to the front paste down. In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, generally smart, with light edge wear, with a few small chips. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the front wrap. Wraps are a little age-toned with a few light handling marks, heavier to the rear wrap. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with a few light handling marks. Very Good.
