xii, xv, 463, [1] pp. Original cloth. Ink stamp of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia on title page. Very Good. COPY OF JAMES AITKEN MEIGS, with his signature dated Feby 1857 on the front flyleaf. The bookplate of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia states that this copy was bequeathed in 1895 to the Academy by John G. Meigs, father of James Aitken Meigs. First Edition in English. Unzer. English translation of Garrison-Morton 1357 (citing 1st German ed., 1771): "Unzer was probably the first to employ the word 'reflex' in connection with sensory-motor reactions." Prochaska. English translation of Garrison-Morton 1386 (citing 1st Latin ed., 1780-84): "Prochaska introduced the idea of a 'sensorium commune' in the central nervous system, a consistent and comprehensive theory of reflex action." This book is not scarce but almost all copies are in less than desirable condition. This copy is an exception and is Very Good, and maybe better than Very Good.
