A presentation copy of this work, which regards the construction of harbours. From the Longman's Civil Engineering Series, this is the first edition of this work. With a hand written presentation plate to the front pastedown, 'With the Authors' Compliments, 5th April 1895'. Illustrated, with numerous vignette diagrams. Written by William Shield, a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Executive Engineer of the National Harbour of Refuge, Peterhead. This engineering work focuses on many aspects to be considered when constructing harbours. This includes wave knowledge, movement and oscillation, the theory of tides and silting. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with light rubbing to the head and tail of spine in addition to the boards. Presentation inscription to the front pastedown, 'With the Author's Compliments 5th April 1895'. 'Royal Society of Edinburgh' stamp to the title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Spotting to the fore edge, affecting the occasional page. Very Good Indeed.…
