Boston: Charles Spear, 1854. First Edition. Octavo. 289-336 pp. Pictorial wraps with portraits of English prison reformers Elizabeth Fry and John Howard to front. General wear, creasing, and smudging; ownership inscription to bottom of rear wrap. Binding sound and pages show marginal spotting else unmarked; Very Good. The Prisoners' Friend was, according to contemporary sources, the only publication of its time advocating for prison reform and the abolition of the death penalty. This issue discusses the cases of James Clough and David Dempster, as well as discussions on the state of New York prisons and the treatment of discharged prisoners. Scarce in retail.
