Item description from seller

tall8vo., 23.2cm, 211,[iv]p., (Publisher's ads), in the original cloth, blind-stamped on boards and gilt decorations and titles on the spine, heavily fade speckled on the binding, yellow coated endpapers, bookplate on front pastedown; free endpaper clipped in upper corner, a clean solid copy,~ The bookplate is from The Fraser Institute (withdrawn) donated by John H.R. Molson. Also contains an attractively printed book ticket, printed on blue stock paper, "B. Dawson, Bookseller & Stationer, Montreal" The author (1806-1879) was a French political economist who, in his early years, became a convert to Saint-Simonism, a doctrine of socialism which was based on the precepts of Claude Henri de Rouvroy Saint-Simon (1760-1825) and which became for a time a near-religion among its followers. Chevalier was arrested in 1832 when his editorship of the Globe, the organ of the Saint-Simonians, caused him to be charged with outraging public morality. Through the intervention of Thiers he was given a short sentence and then sent by Thiers on a mission to the United States; this was accomplished so well that he was then sent on an economic mission to England. Success followed success, culminating in the important part he played in bringing about the conclusion of the commercial treaty between France and Great Britain in 1860. He was created a member of the Senate in 1860 and a grand officer of the Legion of Honour in 1861. This work was first published in Paris in this same year, as well as in Manchester. ~~~ cf. Howes 358 & 359.
