Item description from seller

The Problem of China by Bertrand Russell. London, George Allen and Unwin, 1922. With the initials 'J.C.' for Joseph Conrad on the blank before the half title. DESCRIPTION: Octavo, 260 pages, original cloth, First Edition. Joseph Conrad's copy initialed by him in his characteristic hand in ink to the blank before the half title. Conrad shows a shakey indestinct hand as he approaches the end of his life. This copy was most probably given to him by Betrand Russell himself. FURTHER COMMENTS In his autobiography Russell explains that he saw nothing of Conrad during the war or until his return from China in 1921. Conrad's last letter to Russell concerns in part his reading of 'The Problem of China' a book in which ' Russell has pinned his hopes for China and the world for international socialism.' Conrad was evidently interested in Russell's political views on China, his response his last communication as he died shortly after. This particular copy may well be one of the last books that Conrad ever read. We speculate that the pencil note included in this copy might have been written in by the prestigious bookseller ?William Foyle. This has not been checked in Tutein's Bibliography of Conrad's Reading Annotated books. SIZE: 200 x 130mm CONDITION: Spine faded and frayed and chipped to cloth at ends otherwise overall in very good state.
