The Blood-plaque or Third Corpuscle; II. Degeneration and Regeneration of the Corpuscles; III. The Relation of the Corpuscles to Coagulation and Thrombosis. Originally published in The Medical News, Vol. 48, 1886, pp. 365-370 (with 6 text figures), 393-399 (with 11 text figures), 421-424 (with 7 text figures). "These important lectures, based on original research, begun in 1882 on the blood-plates of Bizzozero (haematoblasts of Hayem), established Osler's reputation as an original investigator. The aggregation of blood platelets which takes place as soon as the blood is withdrawn from the body is known as 'Osler's phenomenon'. In his own words here published: 'I was the first to observe, in 1881, that in the most superficial part of the white thrombi, the blood-plaques were present' " (Golden & Roland 22, reproducing the title page in figure 6 on p. 6, "This research established Osler's reputation as an original investigator"). Garrison-Morton 13281. "The Cartwright Lectures were the last of Osler's experimental observations on platelets. . . . William Osler made some of the earliest key observations that identified platelets as a normal component of blood and linked their function with thrombus formation. Although Osler's studies on platelets were probably his most significant original scientific contribution, they have not generally received much attention. . ." (Marvin J.
