8vo. pp. 1 p.l., 66. 12 original watercolour vignette drawings mounted in the text. later calf by Morrell, rebacked with gilt spine mounted, gilt inside dentelles, gilt edges, endleaves preserved. ownership entry of G.W.D.Lowry, 32nd Regt, Toronto, April 30, 1841. calling card of Lieut. Colonel John Bayne Maclean [1862-1950], (late) 17th Royal Canadian Hussars, founder of Maclean s magazine and the Financial Post, on which he has written a note presenting the copy to his friend Donald in April, 1948, remarking on having bought the copy 30 years previously in London, not having been able to part with it, and having known in later years several of the officers of the club ("and some of them were characters"). First Edition. "Verses, as recited at its meetings, celebrating the activities of this convivial club of limited and military membership." (TPL) "The club.was formed for the purpose of enjoying sleighing and encouraging and developing the accomplishments of tandem driving by its members. The latter were for the most part officers drawn from the various regiments of infantry stationed in Toronto, though there were a few others who were member of Toronto society and not of the Garrison. The club was organized in 1849.". (John Ross Robertson, Landmarks of Toronto, 1894-1914, Vol. II, pp. 1040-48. Among the members were Lieutenant-Colonel Wingfield and Major Markham, Captain Brooke, Captain Osborne Markham, Lieut. Dickson, all of the 32nd regiment, Lieut.-Col. McBean, Capt. Hollliday, 93rd Highlanders, Lieut. Colville, 85th Regiment, Lieut. Bamford, 73rd Regiment, Captain Arthur, Lieut. Domville, and Capt. Strachan, Lt.-Col. Airey, Capt. Byron, Lieut. Hutton, Lieut. Lang, Lieut. Talbot and C.Roche, all of the 34th Regiment, &c. The watercolour vignette drawings depicting sleighing parties of members and ladies are unsigned but were presumably executed by a club member; the names of the members depicted are entered in manuscript below the drawings.
