About the Author
Deborah Kennedy is a professional engineer. She earned a B.S. in civil engineering from Purdue University, an M.S. in civil engineering from the University of New Hampshire, and an M.A. in teaching secondary mathematics from The Citadel. Ms. Kennedy has practiced structural engineering with many consulting engineering firms, including Bechtel, E. C. Jordan & Co., Rust International Inc., and Lockwood Greene. Ms. Kennedy also has ten years of experience teaching high school mathematics and PLTW pre-engineering courses, including civil engineering and architecture. Since 2009, Ms. Kennedy has been a curriculum writer for PLTW.
Stuart Baur is a registered architect, a doctor of civil engineering, an assistant professor of architecture at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, and a PLTW affiliate. Dr. Baur has practiced with the architectural firms Arquitectonica, The Nichols Partnership, and Bermello Ajamil and Partners in South Florida. His notable projects include the American Embassy in Lima, Peru; the Banque of Luxembourg; the Sawgrass Mills megamall; and the American Airlines Concourse A expansion at the Miami International Airport. A joint project between the University of Miami and Habitat for Humanity during the 1992 Hurricane Andrew aftermath piqued his interest in stability and sustainable buildings and inspired him to complete master's and doctoral degrees in civil engineering at the University of Miami and the Missouri University of Science and Technology. He also holds architecture degrees from the Ohio State University and the University of Miami. Dr. Baur has been involved with the Missouri University of Science and Technology's solar house project since 2002 and has served as faculty advisor for several teams. He also helped develop a solar village that serves as a student housing and research facility to educate the public about renewable energy technology and environmentally friendly landscaping. Dr. Baur is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and a founding member of the council's Heartland Chapter (Mid-Missouri). He is also a 2002 Missouri Chamber of Commerce Leadership Missouri Graduate.
Eva Kultermann is Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in the College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology, where she teaches courses in architectural design, material technologies, and energy conscious/sustainable design. In 2011 she was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award for the College of Architecture. Formerly, she taught at the University of Arkansas and won the school's Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award. She also worked as a professional builder, carpenter foreperson, and project manager. Ms. Kultermann is a licensed architect who holds a carpentry diploma from Northwest Arkansas Vocational Technical School, a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arkansas, and a Master of Science in Energy Efficient Architecture from Oxford Brooks University in England.
