Second printing from October 1906 of a book originally published earlier in the same month. The lettering on the spine is a little faded with fraying at the top and bottom and along the edges. There is a three inch tear along the edge of the rear panel at the bottom and another small tear nearer the top just below the title. There is four inches of tearing along the top half of the right edge of the spine next to the front panel. Light surface wear to the front and rear panels with rubbing and bumping to the corners and a small stain near the top of the front panel. The page edges are a little darkened with two small brown marks to the fore edges. Gift message to the original owner, Lilias Rider Haggard, dated Christmas 1906 to the front free endpaper. There is a little browning and light spotting to the endpapers with a Jarrolds blind stamp to the top right corner of the front free endpaper. There are a few spots and marks through the book but the pages are generally clean and unmarked. The binding is a little slack with the webbing exposed just after the contents page but reasonably secure. Illustrated by H.R. Millar. No jacket.
