The adoption of punch card computational equipment radically extended the market for computers and laid the groundwork for the development of electronic computing. "Eckert developed methods for IBM, who funded the Astronomical Computing Bureau at Columbia and published his book. Eckert's influence in the direction of science computers was the key factor in IBM's later success in the computing field." [Goldstine, 107-110].
