Compton won the 1927 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work in 1923, the Compton Effect, or the scattering of a photon by a charged particle, usually an electron, which results in a decrease in energy (increase in wavelength) of the photon. He would go on to be a key figure in the Manhattan Project.
