Synopsis
Book by Rubin, Bonnie Miller
Reviews
Rubin and Mason, both native Chicagoans, offer this second installment in Globe Pequot's new "Quick Escapes" series. The destinations are in Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Each escape includes an overview, ideas on where to go, and what to do, months to visit based on special events, and recommended restaurants and lodgings. The authors' suggestions lean toward the conservative and staid: cafes for steak and chicken, outlets for shoppers, and video games for children. This guidebook is not about backroads, nor is it about the immediate surroundings of Chicago. The authors admit that visitors to Chicago come from all over the country, and, given the alternatives they offer, it is difficult to imagine why even Chicago suburbanites would prefer to escape from instead of to Chicago. A marginal choice for regional public libraries.
