This commemorative and skill-building project guide is for quilters to recreate vintage quilts from American history using today's traditional fabrics!
Jan and Jim Shore have a deep-rooted appreciation for the artistry and storied history of quilt making and the tales behind their unique designs. In Quilting Legacy, they explore what many believe to be the golden age of quilting — the American Civil War.
Featuring a dozen historical quilt designs from Jan's own personal collection — including quilts from her ancestors — that she has carefully curated and reproduced in today's quilting cottons, the projects inside this book include step-by-step illustrated instructions, helpful diagrams, expert tips, complete quilt patterns, and beautiful inspirational photography to help you successfully recreate each vintage quilt.
Each Civil War-era vintage quilt and historical design includes an interesting backstory on the scraps, uniforms, and supplies used as well as the symbolism and meaning behind each quilt for a sentimental step back in time. You'll also find a valuable section on quilt care, complete quilting instructions (from choosing patterns to setting up your machine's proper stitch length), step-by-step guides on classic quilt patterns like Nine Patch and Churn Dash, as well as interesting variations, specific cutting and stitching instructions, tips for selecting and buying classic quilting tools like sewing scissors and quilt rulers, and more.
Over the years, quilts have undergone a radical shift. What started as the stitching of old fabrics for practical reasons became a way to pass down entire portions of a family's legacy. Quilting Legacy is a look back at the fabulous and fashionable quilting techniques that blazed the trails between then and now. The Civil War period yielded a surprising variety of colors and patterns, many of which still have modern appeal. Join Jan and Jim Shore as they highlight some great quilts of the past — and teach you how to stitch together some new history of your own!
A celebration of both American history and the history and evolution of quilting, Quilting Legacy is a must-have for quilting enthusiasts and beginners alike!
