The first edition of William Searle 'Hicks' Quis Separabit?'. Direct from the library at Newton Hall, the 18th century country house and estate in Northumberland, with a pencil shelfmark to the front free-endpaper, and S. F. Widdrington's bookplate to the front pastedown. Collated complete, with thirteen black and white plates by the author with tissue guards, and a photogravure frontis from a painting by Ralph Hedley. Hedley was a realist painter, woodcarver and illustrator, best known for his paintings portraying scenes of everyday life in the North of England. "Quis separabit?" ("Who will separate [us]?") is derived from the Vulgate translation of Romans, 8:35: "Quis nos separabit a caritate Christi.", translated as "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?". In a cloth binding. Externally very smart. Very slightly bumped to extremities and head and tail of spine. Front hinge slightly strained but firm. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with some mild spotting to plates, tissue guards, and first and last few pages. Pencil shelfmark to front free-endpaper. Bookplate to front pastedown.
