"ALL ABOUT RADIATION (Man's inhumanity to Man) By A NUCLEAR PHYSICIST and A MEDICAL DOCTOR." This volume was written from the proceedings of the CONGRESS ON NUCLEAR RADIATION AND HEALTH given at the Royal Empire Society Hall between April 12th and 15th, 1957. All About Radiation presents a hybrid of medical commentary and L. Ron Hubbard's speculative interpretations of atomic blasts, hormones, population control, and human health. The introductory material frames radiation as a universal concern and positions Hubbard as a witness to early U.S. nuclear tests, whose lectures at the 1957 London Congress on Nuclear Radiation and Health were deemed significant enough for immediate transcription. The book blends mid-century anxieties about atomic fallout with Scientology's emerging ideological framework. But it only gets more interesting from there! PROVENANCE: This 1957 first-edition, first-printing, was issued by the Hubbard Association of Scientologists International (HASI), London, by the Speedwell Printing Company. Many thousands of early printings like this one, were CONFISCATED during the January 4, 1963 raid on the Founding Church of Scientology in Washington, D.C. The FDA confiscated: E-meters, thousands of books and pamphlets, training materials, booklets making health-related claims, miscellaneous Scientology literature including early printings of works like All About Radiation. The FDA's legal theory was that the E-meter was a medical device being marketed with medical claims, and that the books were labeling for that device. The court case dragged on for years, finally these seized materials were released under court-ordered conditions. One of these conditions was the inclusion of an E-meter disclaimer. THIS first-edition British printing was eventually distributed through a Scientology organizational channel in the South-Eastern United States (evidenced by a bound-in "Orlando Scientology Center" (NOT Church) promotional label. It includes an early price notation ("3.00") indicating the possible sale price in the United States after the books were returned following the 1971 U.S. District Court decision. This would explain why an original 1957 British printing would have an early 1960s phone number AND a 1971 E-meter disclaimer! This book may very-well been part of those confiscated materials!
