CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: This book is a detailed narrative of Colonel Mason Whiting Tyler's service as a private and and officer from his enlistment in July 1862 to his wounding on March 25, 1865 with the 37th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He describes engagements at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, The Wilderness and Petersburg. The regiment served under Sheridan in the Valley Campaign and were sent to New York City during the Draft Riots to help restore order. The 37th Mass is identified as one of the FOX 300 Fighting Regiments. His story is told in a continuous autobiographical narrative up to the arrival of his Corps at Petersburg in mid-June of 1864. From there, he uses excerpts from his diary and letters to family and friends. Colonel Tyler died in 1907, before he had finished his manuscript. REFERENCES: DORN Mass #330; COULTER 456 "The first part of the book was composed by Colonel Tyler shortly before his death in 1907, from a war diary and many letters written home from the battlefields. The latter portion was put together by other hands almost entirely from the original text and is much more valuable because it includes many interesting comments and observations which were ironed out in the earlier version."; NEVINS pg. 171 "A valuable personal account of the war in Virginia by an officer of the 37th Massachusetts; includes letters, diary extracts, and a long narrative by the editor."
