604p. A hardcover book in very good condition with a good dustjacket. The jacket is torn at the top of the spine, where it was once dampened, and has general edge wear and foxing. Tiny fragments of the jacket are stuck to the top of the book's front cover. Owners' inscription and stamp on front endpaper. Light "vintage" smell inside, but otherwise, text clean and binding tight. Miner Searle Bates (1897-1978) was an American missionary-professor in China who witnessed the Rape of Nanking. After years of teaching at the University of Nanking, he returned to the U.S. and taught at the Union Theological Seminary.
