Original Wraps. 8vo. 46; 16; 11 pages. 21 cm. 2nd edition; "with an appendix containing some observations on Dr. Donaldson's reply to the First edition". Contains Perowne's Remarks (1855, London) ; Donaldson's A Brief Exposure of the Rev. J. J. S. Perowne (London, 1855) , and Bibliographical notes on the Book of Jasher (London, 1833) . Consists of an angry polemic written by English bishop John James Stewart Perowne (1823-1904) in regards to Donaldson's 'Jashar; Fragmenta archetypa carminum Hebraicorum', 1854. Donaldson wrote a reply considering Perowne's vitriolic response to be near-slanderous, and Perowne wrote a rebuttal, attaching it to the second edition. John William Donaldson (7 June 1811 - 10 February 1861) was an English philologist and biblical critic; A brilliant and original scholar; one of the pioneers in applying comparative methods to Greek and Latin Philology. In Jashar (published 1854) he advanced the bold critical theory that fragments of a book of Jashar are to be detected throughout the Old Testament up to and including the reign of Solomon, and that they are 'the religious marrow of the scriptures. ' The outcry which this provoked very possibly precipitated his resignation as Head Master at King Edward's School. Subjects: Donaldson, John William, 1811-1861. Jashar.
