A second impression of the first UK edition, published in 1963. The book was first published in the UK, in identical format, in 1961, and originally in English in 1960 in the USA by Alfred A. Knopf. Translated from the French by Justin O'Brien. Jacket design by Patricia Davey. ***Very good in duo-tone black and red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt remains beautifully bright, and the boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases - just slight creasing to the top and bottom of the spine. Page block edges slightly marked. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with a flourishing ink inscription 'Happy 21st Nobby' on the front free endpaper (please see scans). Pages clean with no internal foxing. No creases or tears. ***In a very good colour-printed dustwrapper, correctly printed with '2nd impression' and which has been neatly corner price-clipped on the front flap. The dustwrapper is otherwise complete, with just a sliver of loss at the top edge of the spine. No serious creases, chips or tears. Edges of dustwrapper just slightly rubbed. The white areas of the back panel are slightly marked. The red titles on the front panel and the spine are gently faded. ***222mm x146mm. 198 pages. ***'Even though Albert Camus never took so engaged a part in political events as Sartre or Malraux, he was certainly, until his tragic death in January 1960, one of the few great contemporary creative writers to express himself on public and international affairs in articles that were nonetheless important for falling under the head of journalism. These articles and addresses, written or delivered between 1942 and 1958, were published in France in three successive volumes entitled Actuelles. Many of them were primarily of interest only to French readers; but others were statements of Camus's attitude to problems of international moment, questions of liberty and justice and of the moral decisions an individual may have to make that transcend even these two ideals. It is these cardinal expressions of Camus's political and social opinions that are collected here in a first English edition of his articles and speeches'. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'Albert Camus, born 7 Nov 1913 - died 4 Jan 1960, was a French philosopher, author, and journalist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature at the age of 44 in 1957, the second youngest recipient in history. Camus was born in Algeria to French parents. He spent his childhood in a poor neighbourhood and later studied philosophy at the University of Algiers. He was in Paris when the Germans invaded France during World War II. Camus tried to flee but finally joined the French Resistance where he served as editor-in-chief at Combat, an outlawed newspaper. After the war, he was a celebrity figure and gave many lectures around the world. Camus was politically active. He was part of the Left that opposed the Soviet Union because of its totalitarianism. Camus was a moralist and was leaning towards anarcho-syndicalism. He was part of many organisations seeking European integration. During the Algerian War, he kept a neutral stance advocating for a multicultural and pluralistic Algeria, a position that caused controversy and was rejected by most parties. Philosophically, Camus's views contributed to the rise of the philosophy known as absurdism. He is also considered to be an existentialist, despite his having firmly rejected the term throughout his lifetime.' (Wiki) ***A nice copy of the second impression of the first UK edition of "Resistance, Rebellion and Death" - of interest to collectors of the work of Albert Camus, and twentieth century literary first editions. A nice copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
