About this Item
First edition. With 75 plates from paintings by the author in colour, 16 head or tail pieces and a folding sketch map. Large 8vo, in the original handsome decorated cloth, the upper cover and spine lettered in gilt and decorated with appropriate French and Italian emblems in gilt and with roses in red and green xii, 235 pp. A fine copy, beautifully preserved, only slight evidence of age. FIRST EDITION OF A VERY UNCOMMON A. & C. BLACK TITLE. Though Scott's paintings are the primary selling-point, his text is lucid, descriptive and quite entertaining. Especially so is his chapter on the culinary adventures to be found along his route. The plates are vivid and bright and were produced to the quality for which A. & C. Black are now legendary.
