First edition. *Autobiography of one of the substitute writers for 'Frank Richards' [Charles Hamilton]. G. R. Samways (1895-1996) was 'responsible for much of the success of the Magnet and Gem. Apart from penning almost a hundred Greyfriars stories for the Magnet, he also contributed well over fifty yarns of St. Jim's for the Gem. His output in the form of verse, jingles and short pieces written under the names of boys at the schools was simply "terrific" . . . . Often he contributed almost the entire contents of the Greyfriars Herald week after week' [Foreword p. 7].
