'Being a weekend gardener forces me to make the most of the little time I have,' says Erin Hynes, author of Rodale's Weekend Gardener. 'Over the years, I've found secrets, both big and little, for squeezing the most garden out of every ounce of effort. For example, I grow plants that thrive on neglect, tweak the balance of nature so pests don't get out of hand, and use tricks that cut down on time~consuming chores. This book is about those secrets~my own, and all the tips and tricks that other gardeners have shared with me.' In Rodale's Weekend Gardener, Erin Hynes gives you all the tips and tricks you need to create a low~maintenance garden that's not only easy to look after but a snap to maintain. It's the perfect book for busy people who only have a few hours or the weekend to tend to garden chores. Rodale's Weekend Gardener is divided into four sections so it's really quick and easy to use. The first section, 'Creating Your Weekend Garden,' helps you plan a yard and garden that fit your time and budget and shares weekend garden makeover stories from real gardeners across the country. The second section, 'Making the Least of Garden Care,' tells how to install your lawn and gardens, then how to save time and effort when caring for them. Chapters include 'Putting Your Plan to Work,' 'Mulching Your Way to a Leisurely Life,' 'Watering Wisely and Well,' 'Fast Fertilizing for Healthy Plants,' 'Getting Rid of Weeds the Easy Way,' 'Time~Wise Pest Control,' 'Easy Lawn Mowing and Trimming,' and 'Quick Care for Trees and Shrubs.' Section three, 'Picking Unpicky Plants,' is a gallery of easy~care plants for weekend gardeners. It contains descriptions and growing guidelines for scads of weekend~worthy plants, including trees, shrubs, vegetables, herbs, perennials, annuals, bulbs, and ornamental grasses. You'll find all the best varieties for weekend gardeners. In the fourth section, 'Easy Projects for the Weekend Gardener, ' you'll find garden projects that you can finish in a weekend~or even a few hours! Projects include window boxes, trellises, pathways, compost bins, a patio makeover, a dry stream, and more! Your garden can now be the haven you always wanted~a low~maintenance landscape you can enjoy year~round. ".…

Hynes (Improving the Boil, Rodale, 1994) gives us a straightforward book geared especially for homeowners long on gardening enthusiasm but short on time and resources. The author begins by taking the weekend gardener through the planning stage without the demands of exacting grid drawings. In addition, Hynes gives readers enough gardening essentials for a basic understanding of soil, sod, tools, plant nutrition and care, and disease and pest control. A "Weekend Gardener's Encyclopedia," including descriptions of the easiest plants to grow as well as a chapter on simple and useful construction projects, is included. The author's easygoing, reassuring writing style and the excellent color photographs make this book an ideal purchase for beginner and intermediate gardeners. Recommended for all public and horticultural libraries.?Art Wolk, Camden Cty. Lib., Winslow Twshp., NJ

Hynes divides the book into four sections. The first, "Creating Your Weekend Garden," advises readers on planning a yard and garden that fit their time budget. The second, "Making the Least of Garden Care," explains how to install a lawn and garden, then how to save time and effort caring for them. The third, "Picking Unpicky Plants," is a weekend gardener's encyclopedia of 100 vegetables, herbs, annuals, perennials, biennials, bulbs, trees, shrubs, and ornamental grasses. Each entry gives information on planting, growing, and harvesting, and on pests and diseases. The fourth, "Easy Projects for the Weekend Gardener," includes such projects as building planters, window boxes, a trellis, a walk, a patio, and compost bins. All this is not as "easy" as the author would have one believe, but there is a lot of useful information here, along with 200 color photographs. George Cohen
