Very Rare First Edition in English of this translation. 12mo, contemporary polished calf, the spines with raised bands, the compartments decorated with gilt tooled devices, one compartment numbered in gilt, one compartment with red morocco lettering label gilt. [viii], 314, [2]; [x], 302; [iv], 214, [28, Index], [2 Advertisements] pp. A very good copy, still in original binding, some rubbing to the extremities, but the bindings still strong and without any repair, one volume missing the red label, but with the impression of the title still visible from the binder's pressing. FIRST EDITION AND VERY SCARCE, WE KNOW OF NO OTHER COPIES CURRENTLY IN COMMERCE. The work begins with a discussion of Calpurnia, wife of Julius Caesar, continues with Livia, wife of Augustus and continues on through three volumes, ending with a discussion of Constantia, wife of Licinius.
