Item description from seller

Penguin Catalogue No. 481. A second printing of the first UK paperback edition, published in 1963. The Penguin first printing appeared in 1945, and was a very fragile wartime production (a copy of which we also have listed on ABE Books). The book was originally published in hardback by the Hogarth Press in 1929. With cover drawing by Paul Hogarth. ***Near fine in illustrated card covers. The covers are beautifully clean, with just some light marks and rubbing commensurate with age and handling over the last 62 years. There are no discernible faults to this copy - no tears or creases, and no reading creases to the spine which is straight and not rolled. The spine also remains unfaded and unbrowned. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions or annotations. Internal pages clean, and the paper stock is hardly tanned at all. No dustwrapper as issued. (Penguin editions from this period were not issued with a dustwrapper) ***112 pages. 180mm x 110mm. ***'Among Woolf's non-fiction works, one of the best known is "A Room of One's Own" (1929), a book-length essay divided into six chapters. Considered a key work of feminist literary criticism, it was written following two lectures she delivered on "Women and Fiction" at Cambridge University the previous year. In it, she examines the historical disempowerment women have faced in many spheres, including social, educational and financial. One of her more famous dicta is contained within the book "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction."' (Wiki)***A second printing of the first UK paperback edition in exceptionally nice near fine collectable condition. It is unusual to find Penguin books from the 60s now in such nice condition. The accompanying photo scans show four other Penguin editions of books by Virginia Woolf which we have also listed on ABE Books, including a scarce wartime first printing of "A Room of One's Own". ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. …
