Iowa has had at least its share of lively individuals who have sparked the distant and recent past." Indeed it has, and this book proves it. Using a city~by~city approach, Mills relates the stories of the many exciting characters and events that highlighted the local past of 18 Iowa cities. The reader meets a myriad of intriguing individuals, including George Washington Carver, the five brave Sullivan boys, Billy Sunday, John Dillinger and his gang, Bix Beiderbecke, Chief Black Hawk, the absurd Cherry Sisters, the feminist Carrie Chapman Catt, and the glamorous Lillian Russell. One also learns of such exciting historic events as the Margarine War of 1943, the Cardiff Giant hoax, the $3.5 million train robbery of 1920, the building of the Capitol, and the beginnings of the multimillion~dollar Sheaffer Pen Company. Throughout the book, the reader becomes increasingly aware of the great cyclical flow of events in Iowa's bygone days: the enormous westward migration in nineteenth~century America; the displacement of the Indians; the great wars and their effect on communities and families; the rise of women's rights; the struggles over the rights of blacks and Indians; the crimes and swindles; progress . It all adds up to fascinating reading for any age.
