FIRST EDITION (1887), small 4to, 235 x 185 mm, 9¼ x 7 inches, cloth backed cream boards with coloured illustration of 3 children watching a cuckoo clock, coloured vignette of small child lying in a meadow on lower cover, floral endpapers, 64 pages. Chromolitho frontispiece, title page and 21 very pretty chromolitho plates of young children all by Harriet M. Bennett. Numerous very pretty sepia text illustrations also by her. Expertly recased and restitched, preserving the original endpapers, spine slightly rubbed at head and tail and slightly marked, corners slightly worn with tiny loss of surface at tips, small crack to surface paper on upper cover next to head of spine, no loss, free endpapers slightly browned, occasional small pale mark to margins, otherwise contents very nice. Spine cloth slightly rubbed, corners very slightly worn, a few small light scratches to upper cover, lower cover a little dusty, free endpapers slightly browned, red ink inscription to front pastedown (see image), small split to endpaper fold at lower edge, half-title lightly foxed, some margins lightly marked or faintly foxed, otherwise contents very nice, 3 inner joints cracked, binding tight and sound.
