Folio (12 inches). 12 George III, Chapter 11. General title leaf + pages 315-318. Woodcut Royal coat of arms and decorative initial. Text in Black Letter. Neatly extracted from a bound volume and expertly mended. The Royal Marriages Act, 1772 made it unlawful for any member of the British royal family under the age of 25 to marry without the previous consent of the Crown. All marriages that violated the rules were declared null and void. The law intended to guard against marriages that could potentially diminish the status of the royal house, and was prompted by the secret marriage of the brother of King George III, Henry, Duke of Cumberland, to Lady Anne Horton (whom George III regarded as highly disreputable). Although the Act was understood to be part of Canadas legal heritage, it was formally brought into Canadian law in 1947 as a result of King Edward VIIIs abdication in 1936 over concerns that such actions could adversely affect the stability of the parliamentary and constitutional democracy of Canada.
