Text/Near New. Gilt embossed linen boards/NF. DJ/None. PO name pencilled to title page; bookshop sticker to rear cover verso; trace discoloration to pg 51 from bookmark. A story of the Setuckit Life-Saving Station in the late 1800s --- before the Service was taken over by the Naval Department and rechristened the Coast Guard, and before the era of wireless stations & the Cape Cod Canal. The Setucket tower, which on a clear night looked out on 6 other lighthouses & 6 lightships, had an outstanding performance record. The current Number One man (officially, "Surfman Number One) at the station was 26-year-old Calvin Homer, junior only to the soon to retire Captain Myrick who had earmarked Cal as successor. Both men were off-duty the fateful dawn "one of them East Injy typhoons" struck. Great rollers beat down outer beaches, the lighthouse trembled, visibility zero & telephones down. A shipwreck and the sole survivor of a crowded lifeboaf was Number Two man Benoni Bartlett of the Orham Crooked Hill Station. Headlines & pictures dominated the Boston Star, and Barlett's name rolled off the lips of ambitious state & federal politicians alike . overnight a hero was born amid grief & confusion while the true heroes resolutely sealed their lips, as the more honorable men among us so often do.
