About this Item
First edition - Victor Gollancz Left Book Club edition - 'not for sale to the public.' ***A very good copy in the standard LBC salmon-pink paper-covered thin boards, with black titles. The covers are quite clean with just some light marks and rubbing commensurate with age and handling. There are no significant creases or tears - just some slight creasing at the head of the spine. Corners and edges slightly worn and rubbed. The fragile paper covering is slightly faded on the spine, but the spine is tight with no tears. Some darkening to the top edge of the page block. Internally the book is very good with no inscriptions, just an original owner's ink stamp 'Cosker' on the front free endpaper. The pages are clean, with none of the usual foxing to the preliminary and last pages. No creases or tears. The paper stock has tanned over the decades due to the cheap paper stock that Victor Gollancz publications were noted for. No dustwrapper as issued. ***301 pages including a detailed 11 page index at the back of the book. 190mm x 130mm. ***Contents: Preface, Chapter I. Introductory, II. The Peasant in the Nineteenth Century, III. The Revolution of 1905, IV. Counter-revolution and Revolution, V. Unity and disunity in Russia, VI. The Orthodox Church and the Slavophils, VII. The Intelligensia and the Worship of the Plain Folk, VIII. Some Religious and Anti-rationalist Thought, IX. The Coming of Marx, X. The March Revolution, A List of Books, Index. ***'This study aims at presenting a clue of social and political history, along with a glimpse of the currents of thought in the Russia of the Tsars. At the end will be found a list of some books useful to the student of peasant life.' [Taken from the author's preface] ***A first edition published by Victor Gollancz in a Left Book Club edition, in very good original condition. These books were mass-produced using quite cheap materials, and few of them have survived in collectable condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 8233
