In this new oral history, Terkel explores Americans' inner feelings and values pertaining to the subject of race. Racial attitudes are examined from a multiracial and multicultural perspective. As with Terkel's earlier works, his study is primarily centered in Chicago, but the people selected for interviews represent a broad spectrum of society; several have appeared in Terkel's previous books. Terkel demonstrates how very skilled he is at drawing out interviewees' intrinsic feelings on race. This work is a valuable accompaniment to Terkel's Working ( LJ 12/15/74), American Dreams Lost and Found ( LJ 11/1/80), and Great Divide ( LJ 10/1/88). Recommended for public and academic libraries.
