Smedley Butler, the son of prominent Quakers, lied about his age to join the Marines in 1898. It was the beginning of a distinguished thirty-year career in which he fought in five wars and won two Congressional Medals of Honor. Butler resigned his commission in 1931 and published this book, which scandalized his former colleagues, as an offensive strike against war profiteering and interventionism.
