It is perhaps an apochryphal story that the site of Britain's most important rail centre was decided by a ham sandwich! A local worthy and land owner was entertaining Brunel at a picnic in his field and kept pressing the great man on the suitability of Swindon as a site for the Great Western Railway to build their rail yard. In the end Brunel, irked by his benefactor's insistance, threw down his sandwich announced that he would indeed take an option on the land and stomped off! Whatever the truth of this tale, Swindon Railway Village was to become the biggest single employer in the town. This book is in FINE condition in a FINE unclipped dustwrapper having been stored in a glass fronted book case in a smoke free home since purchase. Ref L6.
