Synopsis

An account of the development and history of the railways in Fife. It starts in the eighteenth century when the Industrial Revolution was radically altering the rural basis of Britain's economy. The pressures on Fife businessmen caused them to invest into what was seen as an answer to their problems. Mine owners were the first to see the advantages of a network of wagonways linking the ports and mines. The advent of the first passenger train and the collapse of the ill-fated Tay Bridge are recorded, as is the effect of the opening of the Forth Road Bridge with the dramatic fall in freight being carried by rail. The story unfolds with the aid of maps, diagrams, tables and photographs and is complemented by appendices, a bibliography and an index.
